Welcome
A Welcome from the Headteacher
On behalf of all the staff at Wellfield Infant and Nursery School, I am delighted to welcome you to our school. Whether you are new to our community or already part of the Wellfield family, it is a privilege to share a little of what makes our school so special.
Wellfield Infant and Nursery School is a vibrant and nurturing place where children aged 3 to 7 are encouraged to explore, play, and learn through hands-on experiences. We believe that children learn best when they do, when curiosity is sparked, and when learning is full of joy and wonder. Our approach is research backed and grounded in the understanding that every child is unique, and we aim to provide an environment where each child can grow academically, socially, and emotionally at their own pace.
We set high expectations for our children, encouraging them to aim high while ensuring that kindness, support, and celebration of individuality remain at the heart of everything we do. Basic skills in literacy and numeracy are carefully nurtured, but equally important is our commitment to fostering creativity, curiosity, and a love of learning that will stay with our children for life.
Partnership with families is central to our approach. We value your insights, involvement, and support, and believe that children thrive when home and school work together as a team. We also work closely with our colleagues at the junior school to ensure smooth transitions and continuity in learning, helping children feel confident as they move through their early years of education.
Since joining Wellfield in September 2025, I have had the joy of seeing our children flourish and witnessing the dedication and passion of our staff first-hand. It is a privilege to lead such a warm, caring, and committed community, and I am excited to continue building on our successes as we create meaningful and memorable learning experiences for every child.
I hope our website gives you a glimpse of life at Wellfield Infant and Nursery School. My door is always open, and I welcome the opportunity to speak with you, hear your ideas, and work together to bring out the very best in our children.
With pride and love,
Mrs Joanne Thirkill
Headteacher

MISSION STATEMENT
Our school motto is "We Inspire and Nurture Success". This motto illustrates our whole school ethos. We strive to provide the best level of care and support for all children and provide an exciting learning environment which promotes learning and collaboration, between pupils and staff and between pupils and their peers as well as collaboration between the staff themselves. In addition to this, staff strive to continuously develop their practice and deliver outstanding teaching so that all pupils achieve their full potential.
The school maintained it's grading of Outstanding in it's last Ofsted inspection which took place in March 2023. In the report Ofsted stated:- Pupils flourish at Wellfield Infant and Nursery School. Pupils, including those in the specially resourced provision for pupils with SEND, engage in purposeful learning activities. As a result, they achieve well in a range of subjects. Children in early years are exceptionally well prepared for key stage 1, while pupils in Year 2 are equipped for the transition to junior school equally well.

Our skilled team of staff are dedicated to ensuring that all of our pupils are offered the best start possible and we encourage our parents and carers to work in partnership with us to support their child's education and development. We have developed a wide range of workshops for our parents and carers which we deliver throughout the year. These offer a deeper insight into the teaching and learning going on in the school and provide ideas for supporting children's learning at home. More information about the workshops can be found in the Parents section of our website.
Confidence in a school comes from knowing and understanding what is happening within it. We feel it is important that mutual understanding and trust should be the basis of our shared responsibility and therefore we operate an "open door" policy at Wellfield, where you are encouraged to come into school at any reasonable time and see at first hand the learning opportunities we provide for all our children. All our parents and carers are invited to come along to our "Stay and Play" taster sessions each year. These sessions are always popular. They offer our families the opportunity to join the children in their classrooms and our outdoor environment so they get a first hand experience of the school in action.
To find out more about the curriculum on offer here at Wellfield go to the "Curriculum" page in the About Us section or take a look at the wealth of information and photographs on the year group pages in the Children's section. You can also take a look at our facebook page which can be accessed via the facebook logo on the Home page of our website.
We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you find the information you are looking for.
